The Kentucky Derby may well be a few weeks away yet, but the solid gold cup already awaits the owner of the horse that wins the 141st running of the prestigious horse race on May 2nd at Churchill Downs.
The stunning cup is made of 14-karat gold and was crafted by the New England Sterling company in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, for the 40th consecutive year. Three smaller sterling silver replica trophies are also presented to the winning trainer, jockey and breeder of the Kentucky Derby.
On top of the jade base, the gold cup is 22 inches tall and weighs around 1.85 kilograms. It is topped by a 14-karat gold rider and horse and has a horseshoe-shaped wreath handle combination attached to its sides. Quite a magnificent piece of design I’m sure you’d agree.
