Royal Randwick’s The Championships, Sydney’s showpiece autumn horse racing carnival now has a world class trophy design.
Racing New South Wales chairman John Messara said: “They are talking about The Championships in Europe, Asia and America. This is only the second year of The Championships and it is only going to continue to develop as one of the great international race carnivals.’’
The trophy is designed by renowned Sydney jeweler Nic Cerrone and valued at $50,000.
“These trophies have been made with passion, not for value,’’ he said.
The most beautiful of horse riding trophies features a horse’s head and neck and contains more than 2,000 Columbian emeralds, eight-carat black diamonds covering the mane and with two rare white diamonds for eyes.
“I feel the new trophy design captures the energy of the horse in the face and the neck. They are a beautiful and amazing animal and we have tried to show the strength of the thoroughbred in this design,’’ Cerrone said.
Racing NSW chairman John Messara said the use of emeralds in the trophies is due to Sydney being known as ‘The Emerald City’.
